Jasper, meaning “spotted stone” in Old French, is a type of Chalcedony, which is the microcrystalline variety of Quartz. Jasper can be traced back to all ancient civilizations, being the primary mineral used in creating primitive tools due to its hardness and delicacy. The most common color of Jasper is red due to iron inclusions, however, jasper forms in an array of colors dependent upon the amount of impurities. These same impurities create patterns and bands within the stone oftentimes resembling landscapes.
