Another name for Flint, Chert is formed when microscopic plankton that eat sunlight for food eventually die and sink to the bottom of the ocean. Over time, the "ooze" builds up and is put under pressure until it is hard, making Chert. Chert can be found in many colors, including brown, grey, red, and green.
