First discovered in 2001, Spirit Quartz is distinguished by a protruding crystal surrounded by a matrix of smaller quartz crystals all covered in druzy crystals. Spirit Quartz, sometimes called Cactus or Fairy Quartz, can only be found in the Magaliesberg Mountain range in South Africa. The most sought-after material is the dark Amethyst - only 1% of the deposits yield dark Amethyst. Other mixed colors also occur naturally, including White and Citrine Quartz, with various habits. Smokey Quartz is extremely rare. Deposits are mined by individual miners, not at a commercial level. Price is dependent on grade and color, and most mines are thought to be very close to being completely mined out.
